Nike Air Jordan 1 | Brief History

The Air Jordan 1 is, without a doubt, the most significant sneaker in shoe history. It was not only Michael Jordan’s first trademark shoe from Nike, but it also marked the start of Nike’s narrative brilliance. The Air Jordan 1 was originally designed as a basketball shoe, but skateboarders gave it a second life in the 1980s.

Peter Moore was the man behind the design of the Air Jordan 1. While the majority of the shoe’s components were taken from prior Nike designs like the Air Force 1, Nike Dunk, and other similar sneakers. The wings logo with basketball was also something that Moore designed for a personal touch.

In 1984 Nike almost lost Michael Jordan to Adidas and Converse, but after multiple efforts, Nike signed Michael Jordan, MJ’s first Nike deal was for $500,000 per year, which was a record for any athlete at the time. Michael Jordan’s passion for motorsports inspired this particular edition of the kids-only Air Jordan 1 Mid. The sneaker is featured in a Black, Gym Red, White, and University Red color scheme.

We can also see textured leather bases with motorsport-inspired graphics throughout the sneaker, such as the #23 at the forefoot and the Jordan/checkerboard logo on the heels and midsole. (See images below)

The sneaker’s key features are mesh tongues, heel pull tabs, and yellow tongue tags that add an overall sporty look to the sneaker.
