For those that don’t know about the history of perhaps the most beloved Jordan silhouette. I’ll do you a solid by enlightening you on what makes the Air Jordan 3 special in that regard.

Tinker Hatfield said in an interview that he had never met MJ before showing him this sneaker. Michael Jordan showed up to the unveiling of the shoe and wasn’t in the best mood.

That however, changed when Michael Jordan grabbed the sneaker and couldn’t help but smile. After only a 20-minute meeting, it was over and the Air Jordan 3 was now official.

A few interesting design changes included letting go of the Nike “Swoosh” in favor of the “Jump-man”.

That did cause some arguments but ultimately, the Nike marketing team settled for the “Nike” logo at the rear. The elephant skin and tumbled leather was also pretty favored by Michael Jordan.

He liked the look and feel of it.  Even though Tinker Hatfield was told not to use it as no one else ever had on a sneaker. He chose to be brave and unique, arguing it made the sneaker “Luxurious”.

It released in 1998 and ever since, is considered by many to be Hatfield’s greatest.

Air Jordan 3/Retro Success

The Air Jordan 3, also one of Michael Jordan’s all-time favorites, saw decent success with renditions. The Air Jordan 3 retroed in 1994 which was so hyped that stores had difficulty selling them peacefully.

One of the most appreciated Nike ads could also be credited to the Air Jordan 3. The personality ad campaign featuring Mars Blackmon was a huge hit and stayed with Nike for years.

Jordan brand re-retroed the Air Jordan 3 in 2001 and again saw huge success. That too with only 3 different colorways. The fans were further treated to more colorways in 2003 after constant pressure on Nike.

The air Jordan 3 also does quite well on the resale market. To estimate the resale value of the Air Jordan 3 Animal Instinct 2.0, Let’s look at some similar models.

Air Jordan 3 Retro Black Cement

Retail Price: $200

Peak Resell: $436

Release Date: 02/17/2018

Colorway: Black/Fire Red/Cement Grey

This was one of the most exciting releases of 2018. It was the first time the AJ3 featured the Nike Air branding on the Black Cement colorway since 2001. These are also very true to the originals.

It has the iconic elephant print near the toe region and the rear. A black leather upper with “Fire Red” and “Cement Grey” hits through out the sneaker. They released for $200 on February 17th, Michael Jordan’s birthday.

The resale for these is pretty good if you check out StockX. The trade range is between $298-$348 with the average price being $286. That’s an average profit of $86 before service fees and tax.

Had you sold these at peak resale, profit would have been $236. That’s decent resale with good profits.

Jordan 3 Retro Golf Brown

Retail Price: $225

Peak Resell: $420

Release Date: 02/16/2018

Colorway: Brown

These sneakers feature a dark brown leather upper with golden hits and an elephant print near the toe region. It also has better traction and grips on the out-sole.

The resale currently may also be decent on StockX however, very volatile. Trade range is between $208-$312 with an average price of $248. That’s lunch money in profits after tax and service fees.

Had you sold these at peak resale, profit would have been around $195. Over all, the resale for these are pretty volatile with losses and small profits both possible.

Let’s asses the resale of the most similar sneaker to the Air Jordan 3 Animal Instinct 2.0. To make the most accurate estimate for its resale value.

Jordan 3 Retro SE Animal Instinct

Retail Price: $225

Peak Resell: $1000

Release Date: 12/19/2019

Colorway: Black/Sail/Gum Light Brown

This released with the animal pack fur and takes inspiration from the Nike x Atmos Air Max pack. It features a black pony hair upper with multiple animal print overlays.

A white mid-sole, gum rubber out-sole and red jump-man logo finishes off the design.

According to stockX, the trade range is between $149-$233 with the average price being $225. They’re mostly going for retail or just below as over-all value has sharply fallen after the release date.

Had you sold these at peak resale however, profit would have been $775. This indicates that resale for the Air Jordan 3 Animal Instinct 2.0 might not be profitable.

Air Jordan 3 Animal Instinct 2.0

Retail Price: $225

Estimated Resell: $225

Release Date: 06/25/2020

Colorway: Black/Dark Mocha/Rope/Multi-Color

The Air Jordan 3 Animal instinct 2.0 brings back that classic model with multiple animal prints. It also comes with multiple colored laces in red and yellow!

The leather upper this time is reptile inspired. The upper has black reptile leather over lay with a mocha elephant print at the rear.

There are also hits of yellow and green at the rear and a grey tongue with a red “Jump-Man” logo. The sneaker also features a white mid-sole and white out-sole which includes yellow and red.

In my opinion, it’s a pretty fly looking sneaker so I recommend copping in personal sizes if you dig it.

Resale Projection

By assessing the resale values of the aforementioned colorways. My conclusion is that it is unlikely you’ll make much money off this sneaker. Even though, it is a solid colorway.

After applying a standard US tax rate and service fee. To get your money back you need to sell for at least $268. That means by re-selling these you will lose money.

If we take a look over at StockX, currently the Air Jordan 3 Animal Instinct 2.0 is going for profits.

As you can see, they’ve been sold for as high as $450. That’s good profit if you copped before release date. However, resale value will likely fall afterwards.

How to Cop

These probably won’t be so limited so it may be easy to cop especially for personal pairs. You can find these for retail prices at select retailers such as, Foot Locker and Footaction.

You can also find these on re-seller websites such as StockX. They may be expensive now but if you wait till the release date, prices will drop significantly.
