Before we take a detailed look at the Air Jordan 3 Retro Racer Blue, let me walk you through the history of this sneaker. It is, after all, one of MJ’s favorites.

Air Jordan 3 | Hatfield’s Greatest?

The story of the Air Jordan 3 contrasts significantly from that of the Air Jordan 1. While Michael Jordan’s first signature sneaker was met with a lot of criticism, the Air Jordan 3 was love at first sight for the Chicago Bulls’ Star.

He called the Air Jordan 1s “Clown”-like but as soon as he saw the Air Jordan 3, Michael smiled instantly, as reported by Tinker Hatfield himself.

Apart from MJ’s instant infatuation with the silhouette, the Air Jordan 3 was also a special sneaker as it was a catalyst for Jordan Brands’ eventual independence from Nike as an independent subsidiary.

It was the first Air Jordan to forgo the Swoosh, establishing itself as a strong enough brand to stand on its own feet. This decision, however, was met with a lot of criticism at the Nike headquarters but eventually, they conceded.

Another design element that was slightly controversial the elephant print overlays. While they were untraditional, Michael Jordan liked them and thought they gave the sneakers a luxurious feel.

With so much positive feedback from the champ and a short 20-minute presentation, MJ gave the thumbs up and the Air Jordan 3 was set to release in 1988.

With so many retros, re-releases, and brand new colorways, the Air Jordan 3 is still one of the most popular Air Jordans. But are they worth reselling in 2021?

Air Jordan 3 | Resale In 2021

The Air Jordan 3 frequently sells out and is still a best seller amongst Jordan Brand’s sneaker portfolio. However, popularity does not always mean good resale value in most cases.

In 2020, Jordan Brand dropped a number of 3s with moderate to good resale values. Examples include the Air Jordan 3 Fire Red, Varsity Royal, and the women’s Laser Orange. They did sell out and remained profitable, however, not by exceedingly high margins.

Yielding gross profits of around $50 on average.

On the other hand, collaborations are highly lucrative and you should always keep an eye out for them such as 2020’s Fragment x Air Jordan 3.

This year, the Jordan 3 hasn’t had a very busy year, with notable releases being the Rust Pink and the highly profitable Maniere x Air Jordan 3.

Regular releases are still expected to yield average profits, however, to get a more accurate estimate, let’s head on over to the secondary market!

Air Jordan 3 Retro UNC (2020)

  • Retail Price: $190
  • Peak Resell: $700
  • Release Date: Saturday, March 7th, 2020
  • Colorway: White/Valor Blue-Tech Grey

This iconic colorway pays homage to Michael Jordan’s alma mater, dressed in hues inspired by the University of North Carolina.

White tumbled leather covers most of the upper’s side panels, toe boxes, and mudguards while polka-dotted prints are featured onto the collars and eye stays.

Scuff guards and rear panels feature tech grey elephant prints while Valor Blue hits provide contrast on the eyelets, embroidered jump-man logos, and the plastic piece on the midsoles.

The rest of the midsoles feature a clean white shade while tech grey outsoles finish off the design.

On the secondary market, these kicks are reselling for average prices of over $360 per pair. That’s a decent $170 gross profit per pair. The Air Jordan 3 Retro Racer Blue will likely have a lower resale since it’s not a colorway with such historic weight behind it.

Air Jordan 3 True Blue (2016)

  • Retail Price: $190
  • Peak Resell: $580
  • Release Date: Friday, November 25th, 2016
  • Colorway: White/True Blue-Varsity Red

These sneakers feature a truly special colorway, first seen on the OGs back in 1988.

The Air Jordan 3 True Blue ever since, has been retroed 4 times starting from 2001, in 2009, 2011, and finally in 2016.

These shoes also feature “Nike” branding on the heels, much like the colorways from back in the day.

The upper features white leather with Varsity Red hits on the lower eyelets, tongue’s Jump-Man logos, and on the tongue’s trims. Elephant prints are featured onto the eye stays, scuff guards, and heels while titular True Blue hues can be seen on the midsoles, upper eye stays, and interiors.

White midsoles and grey outsoles finish off the design.

On the resale market, this AJ3 is also highly sought after, reselling for average prices of around $360 per pair. That’s also a decent $170 gross profit.

Air Jordan 3 Varsity Royal Cement

  • Retail price: $190
  • Peak Resell: $400
  • Release Date: Saturday, October 10th, 2020
  • Colorway: Varsity Royal

As a complete flip of the OG Varsity Royal colorway, the Air Jordan 3 Varsity Royal Cement takes on a dark blue tumbled leather upper.

Grey hits with polka dots cover the eye stays and the collars while grey elephant prints embellish the toes and heels.

Tongues don grey hues with Varsity Royal Jump-Man logos while white midsoles and grey outsoles complete the design.

The average selling price in the secondary market is around $250 which is a $60 gross profit. The Air Jordan 3 Retro Sport Blue will likely have a similar value.

Seemingly an amalgamation of the Air Jordan 3 UNC and Sport Blue, this Air Jordan features similar hues with “Racer Blue” hits.

This sneaker predominantly dons a white tumbled leather upper with charcoal elephant print graphics on the toes and the heels. Meanwhile, titular Racer Blue hits cover the top eye stays, tongue’s Jump-Man logos, and the lateral collars.

Heel tabs wear embossed Jump-Man badges with similarly styled “AIR” branding placed underneath. Clean white midsoles and grey outsoles with blue “Jordan” branding finish off the look.

How To Buy For Retail

You can buy the Air Jordan 3 Retro Racer Blue at select retailers and Nike SNKRS come July 10th (Saturday). The retail price for men’s sizes is $190, $140 for GS sizes, $80 for pre-school, and $60 for toddler sizes.

Estimated Resell

These sneakers may not be as extremely hyped, like say, a Travis Scott collaboration, but they’re still popular and I expect them to sell out very quickly.

Using my estimated resell value, expect gross profits of around $90. That’s “Good” according to our Hype Meter!
