Virgil Abloh has been the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s men’s wear collection. Moreover, he also has his own Milan-based brand called “Off-White”.
In order to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Jordan brand, and in order to celebrate that Off-White and Jordan will be releasing a retro rendition of the Air Jordan 5. Here are all the details.

The Off-White Jordan 5 serves a gritty and edgy look. A black textile mesh upper along with Off-White’s signature “Shoelaces” is setting the stage for the NBA All-Star weekend.
The Off-White Jordan 5 includes a 3M reflective tongue with a Fire red jumpman logo and a translucent “23” on the side panels.
The Off-White x Air Jordan 5 will also be releasing in pre-school and toddler sizes.
Inspiration behind the sneakers
It’s been a while that a shoe has been causing such a ruckus in the community but I guess that is what you get when you combine Virgil’s talent with the Jordan brand’s fan-base. Since the first leaks, the news has spread like wild fire.
How does Virgil do it you ask? Well according to him, it all started when he was given his first pair of Jordan’s, the Air Jordan 5. His parents did not understand what the big deal with the shoe was but for him it was like, “they came from a superhero”.
Virgil would sleep with the shoes so that the first thing he saw when he woke up were the Black Metallic Air Jordan 5. After deciding to collaborate with Nike, he was shown the market insights regarding the Nike Air brand and he was shocked.
People would regard the Nike Air brand to be purer than the air itself. Virgil took this idea to the next level by creating holes on the shoe and on the box as well. For Virgil this was a way of communicating that “the same air that’s outside is in the product”.
In my personal opinion, the sneakers are outstanding. They offer a sense of familiarity yet hint towards the future. I guess that’s why they pay Virgil the big bucks. His ability to combine different time eras into a single piece of footwear is unheard of.
Moreover, there could not be a better time for the pair to drop. The 69th edition of the NBA All-Star Weekend will be taking place on the 16th of February, just a day after the Jordan 5 drop.
This time the event will be taking place in a city of great significance both for the namesake of the Jordan brand and Virgil himself, Chicago. The NBA All-Star Weekend has become a chance for the players to show-off their personal style with extravagant fashion pieces.
I don’t think the release date is a mere coincidence as this offers the sneaker a perfect marketing opportunity. The internet will be overloaded with news about the All-Star Weekend and the loudly-dressed athletes are sure to wear the upcoming Jordan 5.
