Air Jordan 3| History

Air Jordan 3 White Cement Eric Pagsanjan
From Eric Pagsanjan

Released back in 1998, this sneaker is dubbed by many as “The greatest Jordan ever”. The Air Jordan 3 has an interesting bit of history behind it, making it a pretty special sneaker.

Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Jordan 3 and started off with a lot of pressure. He was told that his creation had to be unique while still maintaining the same level of performance.

Hatfield said in an interview that he had never met Michael prior to the unveiling of the AJ3. After the Chicago Bulls’ star held the shoe, he instantly smiled.

This was in stark contrast to Michael’s reaction to the first Air Jordan 1. He said they were “Clown-Like” and only gradually did they grow on him. With the Air Jordan 3 however, it was love at first sight.

The meet-up only lasted 20 minutes before Michael wanted to make the sneaker official. His favorite addition was the tumbled leather upper and elephant skin pattern.

A notable design change with the AJ3 was the lack of a “Swoosh” in favor of a Jordan brand logo. This was argued against at first but Nike settled for a “Nike” branding on the heel of the sneaker.

Hiroshi Fujiwara is the name behind the iconic street-wear brand ‘Fragment Design’. He founded the company in 2003 and started off projects with large companies such as Levi’s and Nike. Even way before the Fragment Air Jordan 3 White Black, pretty much all of Fujiwara’s collaborations have been a hit.

Most of Fragment’s collaborations, especially those with Levi’s have been extremely popular. Especially their Fenom line that passed through names such as Medicom Toy and Starbucks.

Fujiwara has always had a huge influence over Japanese street-wear culture. The Air Jordan, Nike Dunk, and Adidas Superstar became so popular because of him. Fujiwara simply rocking a pair of any sneaker made it the next big thing in Japanese street-wear.

Hiroshi’s first collaboration with Nike was in 2000 when they made the Nike Air Woven. This sneaker actually had a woven upper and was inspired by a 10,000-year-old dress found in a cave in Oregon. These kicks were super popular and started a legacy of various sneakers that would sell out instantly.

Colorway: White/White-Black

The Fragment Nike Air Force 1 Polka Dot features almost identical color blocking to the Fragment Air Jordan 3 White Black. A white leather upper is only contrasted by black polka dots on the rear, black laces, and an “Air” logo on the mid-sole.

A White mid-sole with Air technology and a black out-sole finishes off the design.

On StockX, the average selling price is an impressive $440. That’s over $200 in pure profits while at peak resale prices, profits are as high as $300.

Peak Resale: $1,650

Release Date: 01/01/2008

Colorway: Vivid Pink/Tour Yellow-White

Meanwhile a vibrant yellow covers the toe-box, side panels, and collar. A Fragment logo at the rear and a white sole completes the design.

On StockX, although the market for them is quite small with only two sales, resale is extremely high. The highest they’ve been sold for is a whopping $1,650 which is over $1,400 in pure profits. I believe the Fragment Air Jordan 3 White Black will have similar resale value.

Fragment Air Jordan 1 Retro

From StockX

Retail Price: $185

Peak Resell: $4,500

Release Date: 12/27/2014

Colorway: Black/Sport Blue-White

The Fragment Air Jordan 1 Retro is perhaps the most popular sneaker out of all their collaborations. This sneaker features a Black, white, and blue leather upper. There’s white on the toe box and side panels while blue on the rear and collar.

A black toe region, laces, and lace guards provide further contrast. Finally, a Fragment logo on the rear, white mid-sole, and blue out-sole finishes off the design.

On StockX the average selling price is $3,200 which is an average gross profit of over $3,000. At peak resale prices, profits are as high as $4,000!

Although resale for the Fragment Air Jordan 3 White Black won’t be quite as high. You can still expect some pretty crazy resale prices.

Retail Price: $200

Estimated Resell: $1,100

Release Date: September/17/2020

Colorway: White/White-Black

After sprouting various rumors since Hiroshi Fujiwara was seen wearing a pair, the Fragment x Air Jordan 3 is finally set to release on the 17th this month.

The sneaker features a monochromatic upper constructed with a high quality tumbled leather. For contrast, smooth black accents are applied along the toe, mudguards, and rear. These accents replace the classic elephant print which is featured on most Air Jordan 3s.

A large Fragment thunder bolt logo can be seen on the heel and also a smaller one on the rear. A subtly embroidered Jump-Man on the tongue and co-branding can be seen on the in-soles. An Air Unit elevated white mid-sole and matching out-sole completes the design.

Resale Value

It’s pretty certain that not only will they sell out fast, resale prices will also be extremely high.

To get your money back on StockX, you’ll need to sell for at least $240. Thus by using my estimated resell value, you can expect profits of around $860. I believe by holding them, prices will rise over time leading to even higher profits.

You can also sell on eBay which will exempt you from paying any service fees.
