A Look Inside Vapormax 2020
Nike‘s latest Air Vapormax 2020 high-performance lifestyle sneaker receives a contrasting new colorway, utilizing multi-color patterns and eco-friendly recycled parts, but with a darker, bolder color palette.
“Smoke Grey,” as this colorway is called, is found across the majority of the Flyknit upper. A multicolor recycled yarn weave, also found in the last pair of Vapormax 2020s, is intertwined beneath at the toe and Swoosh area, giving the grey almost a purple-toned hue. Nike’s proprietary Grind material — made from recycled synthetics — can be found across the heel and midfoot for the lightest shade on the sneaker, besides the white Swooshes themselves. Black is found around the ankle collars and wire-lace area, while a dash of red hits the tongue and heel pull, as well as the locking rope around the rear shell. To finish it off, a completely-transparent outsole is found on the bottom.
Of special note is the FlyEase fit system. Although this one-handed lacing assemblage has appeared on everything from the Air Jordan 33 to the Space Hippie 03, this marks its debut on the Vapormax line. Atop the mosaic-patterned tongue sits a rectangular box that holds high tensile, winch-like cords. These are tightened by yanking on the heel’s multicolor, bungee-like “Lock” tabs and loosened by tugging on the green “Release” tongue tabs.
With all colors and hues combined, the shoe comes off very balanced not only in shape and fit, but now color as well.

The Vapormax in Today’s Sneaker-scape
When the Vapormax debuted on Air Max Day (March 26th) in 2017, there were very mixed reviews on it. On one hand, folks were enamored with the technology that had gone into the shoe. And others were skeptical of the shoes staying power, based on its cushy aesthetic and aggressive air bags. To be fair, it was quite polarizing in the sneaker scene at the time.
Just later that year, Virgil Abloh and Off White released The Ten which shook the sneaker world to it’s core and set the gold standard for collaborations. In that handful of sneakers was the Vapormax which are still reselling now for over $1,300. Quite the investment. Since then there were two more Off White Vapormax to release.
Another personal favorite of mine was the Vapormax collaboration with Japanese techwear company Acronym. The canvas was the Vapormax Moc which featured three standout, dystopian colorways. The campaign was also quite notable that featured head of Acronym Errolson Hugh alongside John Mayer.
Resale Anticipation
While we here at SFS are always excited about innovation and technology in sneakers, that doesn’t always translate to booming sales.
This new Smoke Grey color way should take after the model of the first Vapormax 2020 which was the Pure Platinum Multicolor. These now are coming in JUST above retail. After fees you’re probably breaking even. We wish that price tag wasn’t so steep or else consumers may be willing to pay more over retail.
For now, we’ll label these new Vapormax as an even sell opportunity! Cop if you like but don’t count on a big payday.
