A Closer Look
The collaborative GEL-Lyte III arrives in celebration of the silhouette’s 30th anniversary. Per atmos, this particular pair draws inspiration from the scenes of Los Angeles and Tokyo. The sneaker will be available in unisex and kids sizes, alongside corduroy tote bags, satchels, and T-shirts in five colors.
The sneaker — which has a mismatched color scheme — features heavy use of corduroy, a material Wotherspoon is no stranger to, having wrapped his Nike Air Max 97/1 in the material in 2018. It has corduroy on its split-tongue throat, as well as on the side panels. The ASICS branding on the sides can be removed via Velcro, adding a layer of customization to the upcoming project.
Wotherspoon famously released a pair of highly-sought after Air Max 97/1s after his design was chosen as the winner of Nike’s 2017 Vote Forward campaign and saw its first official release on Air Max Day in 2018. Following that, there was speculation that Wotherspoon and Nike had another collaboration up their sleeve, however, the designer and Round Two co-founder later confirmed that the project had been put on ice and that he wouldn’t be collaborating with Nike for a while.
The reason for the change of heart was that Wotherspoon wanted to work with other brands, ASICS being one of them.
Here are the official images.
Sean Wotherspoon’s Sneaker Endeavors
While we’ve all seen the Air Max 97/1 we’re also looking forward to seeing more things from SW. Recently he’s come out about another collaboration with Adidas – calling his sneaker the Super Earth, a take on the classic Superstar.
Mr. Wotherspoon has also shared the samples that have never been released. Maybe a friends and family? For now we’re not sure.
Resale Anticipation
The original Nike collaboration was probably the pinnacle for a resale model. While I don’t see these Asics going for as much as the Air Max, there’s still money to be made indeed. It’s our best estimate that there would be more pairs of the GL3 vs the 97/1 which would indicate a lower price.
Sizes 7-10 should have a significant resell premium. If you want your best chance at copping a pair, try going for the half sizes. And if you happen to get your hands on a pair and want to cash out, I would do it quickly. A trend I’ve seen of recent is prices tailing off hugely only a day or two after folks get pairs in hand. I think the quicker the better to maximize profit.
With all that being said, do we think the Air Max 97/1 will go up in value? I personally don’t think it would have too much of an impact but on the other hand I could definitely see the demand going back up with people having seller’s remorse.
Nothing is confirmed but we could see a stateside release through Asics’ website at a later date. Stay tuned for updates!
