What is Civilist?
Civilist’s story starts way back in 2009. Their first store opened up in Berlin-Mitte, Brunnenstrasse which was formerly being used as an art gallery. According to Civilist, they did not change the interior all that much and left the concrete floor coating as it was. They only added the wall unit from the fifties and some other furniture.
Their store was diversified into various categories. The founders, Alex Flach and Andreas Hesse, wanted to create space that catered to skaters, acted as a streetwear boutique, and allowed art exhibitions and launches to take place.
This diversified strategy allowed different kinds of individuals to meet and collaborate such as musicians, artists, skateboarders, and BMX riders. This was done in order to imitate Berlin’s skateboarding scene and its club culture. The store was a replica of that entire approach.
As the store gained popularity, they were offered the space next door where the continued to have pop-up bars with Nike SB, a one day only lobster restaurant, a Vans Syndicate showroom, a keinemusik launch, art exhibitions to the Stussy Berlin store.
However, redecoration was a hassle and couldn’t be sustained. Therefore, the asked Nike SB for a more permanent option. Nike SB happily obliged and with their support, Civilist was able to bring one of their longest-lasting ideas to life – putting iconic parts of the Neue Nationalgalerie into their store.
It was a tribute to their favorite skate shop that was built by Bauhaus master Miles Van Der Rohe. However, due to several reasons, that store has been closed.
Civlist is no stranger to collabing with Nike. 7 years ago, back in 2013, Civilist and Nike released an SB Dunk High. The sneaker featured an all-black upper with a white midsole and black outsole. According to Stockx’s sales data, the Civilist Nike SB Dunk High has a resale value of roughly $200.
Although, the release was not a mega-hit it still set-up the boutique store to become familiar with designing and collaborating with brands.
Civilist Berlin Nike SB Dunk Low – How Heat Changes the Color
At the first glance, the Civilist Nike SB Dunk Low looks like your run of the mill standard sneaker. With an all-black leather upper, a pixelated yellow Nike swoosh on the tongue, and a large lateral Nike swoosh in black tone.
However, this is only smoke and mirrors. The real differentiating factor of the Civilist Nike SB Dunk Low is its ability to change color when exposed to heat. This Nike SB Dunk Low has the ability to change its color from an all-black upper to a thermal color as the temperature rises up.
As the temperature rises, the Civilist Nike SB Dunk Low, becomes a heat map. The boring black transforms into a rainbow of colors triggered due to heat. And what’s interesting is that each part of the sneaker reacts differently as can be seen from this video.
However, it’s worth noting that the effect doesn’t take place immediately. The Civilist Nike SB Dunk Low triggers its thermal map several minutes after it has been exposed to heat.
