Background and Storytelling

Jun Takahashi and the good folks at Japanese label Undercover are back again to team up with the swoosh. This time around the canvas is the Nike React Presto, a sneaker new in 2019. The React Presto was a fresh revamp at a classic Nike staple originally released in 2000, the Presto. While the original tagline for the Presto was “like t-shirts for your feet”, the goal for the 2019 project was to create an even comfier ride. With recent cushioning technology React added, the show has had a fantastic reception.

From the React Element 87 to the Daybreak, many a Nike silhouette seems to rely quite heavily on UNDERCOVER, letting the Japanese label help get them out of the door by way of their standard of quality colorways. Gyakusou has done the same with the running category, but even without such narrow focus, Jun Takahashi’s mainline has never disappointed, bringing back the sneaker boot, mixing influence with the Jungle Dunk, and now turning to new horizons as they enter 2020 — the year that marks the brand’s awaited return to form. Though far removed from their recent AW20 show, the collaboration hones in the newly introduced React Presto, giving it a trio of new schemes and modifications that stamp with the brands destructive signature.

Editors notes read: Black, white, and a somewhat colorful purple fill the breadth, each outfitting in a mix of contrast paint splatters to their darker elements — a motif carried over from many a past work. Sole units, which get the brunt of the DIY’d treatment, carry over from the original though with an entirely new tread unit, one that mimics lug soles in an obvious nod to the trail. Elsewhere, cages retain their general shape, but the laces wrapped through opt out of their typical placement, looping from the forefoot upwards in a style that further fuels aggression alongside the reupholstered paneling. From ethereal, galaxy-esque prints on its toe caps to a ballistic mesh along the base, the entire kit removes and replaces the model’s once seamless presentation. Branding then arrives subtly unlike the bold-faced Helvetica of its predecessors, marking with an underscored “U” on the heel and finishing with their standard lock-up along the insole.

Past Collaborations

Sneaker consumers have seen a pile of Nike x Undercover shoes thrown at them in recent years. Some hits, some misses as you would expect. Let’s look back at some of their shoes.

The Nike Air Max 720, Nike Daybreak, Nike Zoom Fly, Nike Element 87 and Nike Pegasus 36 Trail are among the few heavy hitters in terms of popularity. Each model featured a plethora of color ways.

To me, Jun and Undercover have put together a strong roster of Nike sneakers that encapsulate their values and aesthetics. That’s super important and should be remembered. No matter what happens I feel that a collection can’t solely be judged on what sells out. Besides, we don’t even know how many pairs of each sneaker were made.

Reselling Predictions

If you’re not familiar, the Undercover and Nike shoes have had a roller coasted of reselling. Few releases have been a smash hit on the secondary market and these React Prestos might follow this trend. With such a saturated sneaker market right now, folks need to pick their battles and I’m not sure that people are asking for this particular pair. A cool shoe nonetheless, but consider treading lightly if you were thinking of buying for the resale market.

Release Info

The Nike x Undercover React Prestos are releasing Tuesday, January 28th at 10am on SNKRS as well as other retailers. They be available first come first served not draw, so be on the site promptly.
