Asics Gel-Quantum | History 

Japanese sportswear giant “Asics” has been the main player when it comes to sportswear within the region. Their “Gel” technology has been top of the line when it comes to footwear, allowing them to compete with the likes of the Air Max in Japan.

Used in the US markets first in 1986 on the GT-II, they feature the cushioning on the heels and the forefoot. Similar to an Air Max unit except it doesn’t extend all the way through.

Year after year, Asics continued to develop this technology until they started to perfect it in 2003. During that year, Asics released the Gel-Kayano IX which had helical grooves inspired by the patterns on a French doughnut.

Then in 2015, Asics released the Gel-Quantum, particularly the 360, which provided more cushioning (almost 360 degrees). Ever since Asics has been releasing back-to-back shoes with decent success.

We’ve seen plenty of collaborations these past months such as the Asics Sean Wotherspoon x Gel Lyte and the Kith x Asics Gel-Lyte that sold out and are even profitable.

This time, they’re set to collaborate with Coca-Cola, the most popular drink in the world. Coca-Cola has collaborated with sneakers such as Converse and Kith, however, this collaboration maks the first time with Asics. This collaboration with Concepts features an almost all green upper with Asics slashes on the sides and dual branding on the tongues. Green laces blend right in while white midsoles and tan rubber outsoles complete the design.

On StockX, the sneakers with the special boxes are selling for an average price of $215 per pair. With the special boxes, Coca-Cola Asics GEL-Quantum 90 may have a similar resale value.

The Coca Cola x Asics Gel-Quantum 90 dons color tones directly inspired by the popular beverage. Both sneakers also feature a special recycled polyester mesh with red overlays that include cropped “Coca-Cola” branding.

White midsoles clean up the look with a green shade, a nod at the glasses Cocoa-Cola is usually served in, at the rear. The second colorway opts for less bold color tones, rocking more of a white upper with minimal red hits.

Both sneakers, however, undoubtedly carry the “Coca-Cola” branding with pride, regardless of the fact that they’re officially named the “Tokyo”.
