You may be a clothing reseller or someone who’s into fashion, or both, and you might be frustrated with the current hustle of flipping clothes for profit on eBay, with few home runs and many misses and sitting inventory in between.

Those who resell all kinds of clothing from discount sources like Marshalls, Ross Dress For Less, or thrift stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army are all too familiar with the term “Death Pile”;, which is the ever growing stack of inventory that does not move like you thought it would.

Here’s why most luxury fails, and why streetwear is better to sell

Think you can go to the clearance of Saks Fifth or scout out Nordstrom Rack for designer gear on deep clearance and flip it on eBay for a profit?

Think again…

Many designer names, even big ones like Gucci, Hugo Boss and Allsaints lose surprising amounts of value and sell for less than retail on eBay , and the margins can be slim even on deep clearance.

Much of the luxury market has cheapskate buyers on eBay.

Yes it’s true, although wealthy individuals like to buy brands like Gucci new from the store, they stick with exactly that: buying the brand new from the store.

With rare exception, only the thriftiest of individuals will buy luxury brands on eBay, and will often look for the cheapest of the cheap and even fakes.

So, next time you get excited when you see the Italian double G brand on a clothing item in a thrift store, think twice before you buy it to sell.

Not only are buyers cheaper than you would think on eBay, there are a few other negatives to selling luxury brands, even when you buy them brand new with clearance. Here are the top few:

People will think they’re fake

Although they’re taking aggressive action towards solving this, eBay is notorious for the replica clothing items that are illegally sold on its platform, often from China, and almost always luxury brands.

 

  • Even for brand new merchandise, people will make annoyingly cheap offers
  • Expect a high return rate

Streetwear: luxury pricetag, lowkey flexing

Huge amounts of money are flowing in the streetwear community, which is largely driven by celebrity endorsements and subtle but powerful branding.

The irony that contributes to the success of streetwear is one makes more of a statement to wear something very clearly branded like a blatantly marked Gucci shirt.

In addition to Vetements, which is pictured above, brands like Off-White and Kith have commanded prices in the thousands for singular items of clothing.

Even more interesting, streetwear bleeds down most successfully to skateboarding brands that most onlookers are unaware of what the wearer may have paid to be robed in such gear.

The hottest and most consistent streetwear brand

Although Vetements is the priciest streetwear brand, one brand whose prices fall surprisingly close to or even surpass the Swiss brand is a tiny skate brand out of New York City:

Supreme New York.

This streetwear brand will fall on deaf ears to many, but for a rabid few, this brand equates dollar signs and unmatchable desire.

This documentary will open your eyes on the money to be made in this generally obscure skateboarding brand, where you’ll see stories of teenagers making thousands or tens of thousands of dollars flipping skater clothes…
