Nike SB Dunk Low| History

Nike SB Dunk Low History Legacy
Nike SB

The SB Dunk was without a doubt, one of the most hyped sneakers of 2020, along with its regular Dunk sibling. All throughout the year, Nike hit us with collaboration after collaboration as well as some very popular renditions. For example, the Syracuse and Kentucky colorways.

That, however, wasn’t always the case as the SB Dunk wasn’t always this popular. Sometimes, it was even overshadowed by Jordans during the 90s.

It all started in 1985 when Peter Moore, co-designer of the Air Jordan 1, came up with the Nike Dunk. A basketball shoe. Pretty soon enough, Jordan sneakers cannibalized the Dunks and stole their spotlight because of the rise in popularity of Michael Jordan.

Later on, skaters looking for sneakers with good ankle support and traction found the Dunks to be perfect. Thus adopted the Dunks and made them one of the go-to choices for skateboarders that needed good sneakers.

In 2002, Nike established the Nike SB division and right off the bat, started collaborating with other hyped brands. Leading to a hyped silhouette that slowly grew in popularity not just among skateboarders but sneakerheads alike.

The SB Dunks only included a few incremental changes such as nylon tongues and extra padding. Apart from the change in the design of their packaging, the SB Dunk’s greatest difference lies in its elevation. They use Zoom cushioning which was later also implemented into the Nike Dunk.

After a very successful 2020, Nike pushes that momentum forward into 2021 with the same consistency of hyped releases. After dropping the SB Dunk Low Court Purple and the SB Dunk Low Pro Gulf, the Swoosh brings fans another hyped release!

VERDY | “Wasted Youth” and “Girls Don’t Cry”

Verdy x Nike SB Dunk History
From Virelaine.org

Osaka-born Japanese graphic design, Verdy, quickly rose to fame in Japan after collaborating with Bounty Hunter in 2012.

His close ties with A Bathing Ape’s founder NIGO and other prominent figures gave him a head start. Then in 2016, he came up with the “Wasted Youth” fashion label which is inspired by punk, rock, and emo. something he admired dearly and hints of which permeated into his designs for the label.

He even founded “Girls Don’t Cry” which is a fashion label inspired by the love and importance he gives to his wife. Verdy came up with the label when he visited LA with his wife and gifted her a T-shirt. They became so popular that Verdy ultimately transformed it into a brand in 2017.

Soon after, he scored a huge collaboration with Nike SB which sold out instantly and is currently sitting golden on reseller’s markets.

Nike

Retail Price: $125

Peak Resell: $2,030

Release Date: 08/29/2020

Colorway: Black

After releasing a Dunk High earlier in 2013, the Berlin-based “Civilist” and Nike returned to create this masterpiece.

Seemingly an-all black upper at first glance, the Civilist SB Dunk transforms into a profusion of colors once exposed to heat. The all-black upper transforms and features shades of yellow, green, blue, and red all over. Almost giving it a tie-dye appearance.

Clean white midsoles and black outsoles complete the design.

These sneakers are golden on reseller’s markets, with the average reselling price currently sitting at a whopping $890! At peak resale prices, they’ve even been sold for gross profits as high as $1,900! The Wasted Youth Nike SB Dunk Low will probably have a slightly lower resale value but it should still be very profitable.

Matching its moniker “Bearbrick” which it borrowed from Medicom Toy’s signature product, these sneakers feature a black furry upper. The furry textile material is featured throughout the upper including the Swooshes while a “@” logo on the forefoot and white-collar linings provide contrast.

White midsoles and grey outsoles complete its unique design.

Release Date: 02/09/2019

Colorway: VARSITY RED/WHITE-VARSITY RED

These sneakers mark the first time Nike SB collaborated with Verdy.

Released ahead of Valentine’s Day in 2019, these sneakers feature an all-red leather upper, fitting the occasion. Red Swooshes, toe boxes, side panels, and everything else are only contrasted by white butterfly tongue branding, “Girls Don’t Cry” embroidery on the lateral heel and heel tab brandings.

White midsoles and red outsoles complete the design.

On StockX, the average selling price is a whopping $1,740 which is a huge profit of almost $900. That’s likely due to the fact that these are quite limited and released in Japan exclusively. The Wasted Youth Nike SB Dunk Low will likely have a lower resale value but with very good margins.

Retail Price: $110

Estimated Resell: $450+

Release Date: April/06/2021

Colorway: Black/University Red-White-Black

Marking the second time the Swoosh and Verdy have partnered up, these sneakers are highly anticipated by sneakerheads everywhere.

Uppers of this SB Dunk feature black denim-like materials with traces of white stitching that protrude through. Giving off a de-constructed vibe, especially when judging by the patchwork that’s done around the toes.

Leather overlays are featured on the toes and Swooshes while the tongues swap out Nike’s logos for “Wasted SB” instead. At the rear, “Wasted” and “Youth” are attached to each heel tab while red stitching right below provides more contrast.

On the medial side of the shoe, you’ll find a red rose embroidery with white stems that are entangled with the Swoosh. Possibly a hint at the fashion label’s prolific use of red. White midsoles and black outsoles complete the design.
