Nike SB | History

Nike SB Dunk Skateboarding History Grailed
From Grailed

It all started in 1985 with the release of the Nike Dunk. A non-flagship sneaker that was initially meant just for basketball, however, rose to prominence although while in the shadow of the Air Jordan 1.

Originally sketched by Peter Moore, the Nike Dunks were originally called the College Color Highs. That’s because they were originally meant for various Nike-Affiliated colleges in the U.S.

After successfully gaining traction through this campaign, Nike also recognized yet another potentially lucrative market. The Skateboarding sneaker niche.

Skateboarders started adopting the Nike Dunks and Nike quickly took notice. Establishing the Nike Skateboarding division in 2002.

Right off the start, the Swoosh started going for collaborations and limited sneakers that established them as manufacturers of hyped and limited shoes and apparel.

With limited distribution and effective story-telling, the Nike SB Dunks eventually became one of the most sought-after sneakers on the Market.

2020 saw a myriad of releases that were perhaps the most popular sneakers of the year. That momentum carried over to 2021 with exciting releases like the Wasted Youth Nike SB Dunk and the Nike SB Dunk Low What the P-Rod.
