Nike by You: Customers may customize and design their own Nike products, most notably footwear but also athletics, through the Nike By You program. While the reselling aspect of designing your own sneakers isn̵7;t exactly amazing, we break down all you need to know about Nike By You!

Nike By You

What is NikeID?

When it was introduced in 2000, NikeID was the first product of its type. Once again, Nike altered how we all view and purchase footwear. Nike produced unique colors for basketball teams for years so that all of the players could match. There were even specialized basketball shoes made by Nike dubbed “Nike Team” sneakers that came in up to 18 colors.

NikeiD

NikeID made it possible for regular people to design their own Nike shoes. You could pick from a variety of colors and materials on the NikeID website, and you could even have your name or number embroidered on the shoe.

Because of how simple it was to use and how affordable it was, NikeID became popular right away. On NikeID, you could purchase the newest sneakers for just $10 more than the given Nike retail price, and some of them even cost the same.

What Is Nike By You?

Nike By You is essentially NikeiD rebranded. When Nike ID was introduced in 2000, it became one of the first companies to enter the personalization market. Since then, the company’s customization services have expanded from being just a website feature to over 100 in-store “studios” around the globe.

Its 2018-opened New York flagship shop also provides a bespoke shoe design service where consumers may schedule a consultation visit and have unique trainers made there. Nike ID’s visual identity was originally to be updated by New York firm “Gretel”, but the project swiftly expanded into a brand strategy makeover and a new name: Nike By You.

“The next generation of consumers is setting a high bar for customization to express all facets of their identity and individuality,” says Daniel Edmundson, Strategy Director at Gretel. “Nike needed a pivot not only in how they spoke about customized experiences but also what the entire offering meant across the brand, inside and out.”

The name, Nike By You, emphasizes the creative control that the consumers have over designing custom sneakers. To create your custom sneakers, you simply go to http://Nike.com and find sneakers that are able to be customized. From there, you can use Nike’s platform to choose colors and materials and even personalize your pair.

It’s incredibly simple and allows you to separate yourself from the pack completely, by wearing sneakers that nobody else has!

What Sneakers Can You Use With Nike By You?

Unfortunately, you can not customize every single type of sneaker on the Nike site, but you can definitely pick out some cool ones. We chose 3 to highlight, but check out the official Nike site to learn about all the different sneakers you can design with Nike by You.

Nike Air Force 1 Low

This is the big one. The Air Force 1 Low is Nike’s best-selling sneaker of all time. There are tons of hype colorways and collaborations out there already reselling for profit, but those can be way too expensive. Nike By you allows you to create custom Nikes and be able to purchase them without having to pay outrageous sneaker resale.

Shine in satin, stay classic in canvas or get luxe with leather. No matter what you choose, these AF1s are all about you. 12 color choices and an additional gum rubber option for the sole mean your design is destined to be one of a kind—just like you.

Nike Blazer Mid ’77

The Nike Blazer Mid ’77 is not a sneaker as popular as the Air Force 1 Low, but still, one that is great for the upcoming winter season. It’s an incredibly comfortable sneaker and one that has recently gained some fame. See what Nike has to say about the Nike By You Blazer Mid:

Styled for the ‘70s. Loved in the ‘80s. Classic in the ‘90s. Ready for your special touch. The Nike Blazer Mid By You lets you customize the timeless design. Choose between a variety of colors on the pebbled leather upper, tailor it with suede accents and personalize it with a message. Go ahead, perfect your outfit.

Nike Air Max 95

The Air Max 95 debuted way back in 1995 and has been a popular sneaker ever since. Nike has collaborated with the likes of Atmos and Roger Federer on some iconic pairs. Now, thanks to Nike By You, anyone can design their own custom sneakers and personalize them however they’d like!

Inspire the streets with your Air Max 95. The customizable design (with a coveted woven upper) lets you bring your own aesthetic to the legendary look by selecting your fave colors and choice materials. Add a personalized message that lets you tell a piece of your story. Boost the energy with colored Air units or by making your design monochromatic. Then, add the cherry to the bottom and ramp up the comfort by selecting an ultra-cushy sockliner.

Can You Resell Customized Sneakers?

Absolutely! But you can not sell them on any of the main sneaker-selling platforms. StockX, GOAT, Flight Club, etc, will not buy your customized Nike by You sneakers. But you can absolutely sell your Nike By You sneakers on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and eBay. The problem is that anyone can purchase the same sneakers from Nike themselves.

Reselling Customized Sneakers

So if you’re going to sell a pair of customized kicks from Nike, you’re going to need to sell them for below retail, and you are definitely going to have to make sure they are not worn. People purchase sneakers over retail because of scarcity and the fact that they cannot purchase the same pair anywhere else or for less the price. But with Nike By You, anyone can purchase the same pair in the same colorway.

So, while you can absolutely resell your Nike By You custom Nikes, we don’t recommend it because there isn’t really a market for them. People would feel safer going to Nike themselves and are probably willing to pay more. The future possibilities for Nike By You is totally wide open, and it will be interesting to see where it goes.

One idea we had is releasing a limited amount of pairs that people can purchase and then customize, so every pair is unique. Of course, currently, some limited sneakers contain numbers on the inside, but we’ve never seen totally customized pairs.
