Who Is J. Balvin?

J Balvin, commonly known as José Lvaro Osorio Balvin, is a Colombian singer and reggaeton and urban music composer. Balvin, the son of José lvaro Osorio and Alba Mery Vásquez, was born on May 7, 1985, in Medelin, Colombia. At the age of 14, he developed an interest in urban music and started improvising rhymes.

With 13 nominations, Balvin earned the title of most-nominated Colombian artist at the 2019 Billboard Latin Music Awards. Balvin’s winning run is still going strong, but it hasn’t stopped him from advocating for other musicians.

He’s even vented his anger at the Latin GRAMMYs for not giving reggaeton more recognition and for lumping it under “urban” categories.

Balvin is the artist with the most number-one songs on the Billboard Latin Airplay chart. He is also the only Latin artist to reach number one on the Billboard charts 174 times.

When talking about his Nike collaborations, Balvin said:

“Everything I do has to tell a story,” Balvin tells Complex. “I talked to Nike about how I wanted to reflect my mental health journey in a creative way. We discussed how I had to overcome walking through dark moments to find the light. That’s where we came up with the concept for this sneaker. I wanted it to be reflective of how you jump towards the light and your dreams and elevate yourself to get through the dark situations in life.”

The J Balvin x Air Jordan 2 Retro has a powder blue ripstop upper with contrast multicolor stitching, the Colombian reggaeton singer’s whimsical spin on the iconic style.

The tongue features a glow-in-the-dark Wings logo, while the internal lining and heel overlay have an all-over design of cloudy blue sky. The latter is further enhanced by a happy face design that is uniquely J Balvin.

A transparent rubber outsole and a clean white polyurethane midsole with encapsulated Air-sole cushioning provide lightweight cushioning.

When asked about the design and creation of the J Balvin x Air Jordan 2 Retro and other J Balvin collabs, Balvin said:

“I had the Buzz Lightyear sneakers, and I remember that they would shine with every step I took,” Balvin says. “And that inspired the idea to literally show people that, even when you’re walking through darkness, the light is what’s guiding you and helping you find your way. I wanted to take that excitement from my youth and pair it with my favorite brand, which is Jordan. It blew their minds.”

The J Balvin x Jordan Super Play Slide debuts as a part of a capsule collection with the top-charting Colombian musician and boasts a hazy blue sky on the puffy bandage-strap upper. J Balvin logo is shown on a fabric overlay with smiling face symbols, and rainbow-colored contrast stitching is visible.

The glow-in-the-dark midsole, constructed with lightweight foam for smooth landings and a pleasant ride, is given a seafoam green color.

This is obviously a little bit more niche of a pair as it’s not only a slide but also a very unusual design and colorway with the puffy upper and the loud color blocking all over.

This is definitely one of those Nike collaborations that is more designed for summer and wearing at the pool or by the beach, which means now is the best time to buy them because they are cheaper.

J Balvin, a Latin music phenomenon, debuted a brand-new pair of his iconic tie-dye Jordan 1s during the halftime show of Super Bowl LIV. The Air Jordan 1 High J Balvin was then launched in December 2020 when J Balvin and Jordan Brand went psychedelic.

The layered tie-dye canvas upper of the Air Jordan 1 High J Balvin has been crafted with jagged edges to reveal solid black leather patches.

The shoe’s exposed foam tongues give it a retro vibe, while velcro patches on the heel with Jordan and J. Balvin insignias allow users the option to personalize their own pair.

This one-of-a-kind Jordan 1 is completed with a light pink sole and J Balvin’s happy face emblem on the tongue and insole.

This is obviously the number 1 pair people talk about when we talk about J Balvin Jordan 1 sneakers and J Balvin Nikes. The numbers above the image tell the whole story, with hundreds of dollars in profit if you were able to purchase for retail.

Why Nike Collaborations Resell So Well

When you think about high-reselling Nike collaborations, the first that comes to mind is Travis Scott.

Jordan Brand and Travis Scott collaborations seldom happen, but when they do, it is one of the most hyped collaborations of the year, and pretty much every single time, the resale values are insane and easily content for one of the best sneakers to resell for that year.

Numerous international singers, designers, and sportsmen have worked with Nike.

With A-list celebrities like Michael Jordan, Drake, and rapper Travis Scott, they have launched multiple classic collections.

Young La Flame has made sure to supply the heat over the past several years with a number of shoe collabs, even if the size, scale, or SKUs connected with his name don’t match up to Mike, LeBron, or his mentor Kanye.

Although he was first signed to Reebok during his mixtape comeback, his collaboration with Vector laid the groundwork for the endorsement work he would go on to undertake with Nike, Helmet Lang, and of course Jordan Brand.

Travis Scott’s first pair of Nike sneakers were the VaporMax, not the Air Jordan 4 or the Air Force 1. As a response to Adidas’ Ultraboost in some ways, the company released the shoe in 2017 using technologies developed by Yeezy design mastermind Steven Smith over a 20-year period.

The VaporMax was designed as a fashion accessory with cutting-edge visible technology, not as a serious running shoe.

Travis was chosen to be the shoe’s face.

Until now, Travis Scott’s debut collaboration with Jordan Brand has been his most original. His first real collaboration was on the far less well-known Trunner, as opposed to the Retro versions for which he has since become famous.

The shoe is half-trainer, half-runner, as its name implies, and among Jordan aficionados, it has long been considered somewhat of a cult favorite. Scott’s pastel-accented version of the pair was never sold in shops, although it did appear in the Fall of 2017 at NYC thrift shop Beacon’s Closet.

The unique design wasn’t necessarily a portent of things to come, but it marked the beginning of a successful association with Jordan Brand.

Travis would get the opportunity to work on his first Air Jordan as a follow-up to his first Air Force 1 from 2017.

A homage to the former Houston Oilers NFL team, who wore the colors from 1960 to 1996 while competing in H-Town, was made using the baby blue Air Jordan 4 with red hits.

In the months that followed this release, friends and family versions of the 4s with purple suede uppers or tortoiseshell straps also appeared, with the purple version quickly rising to the top of the list. They never materialized, despite the great anticipation of many.

Pairs now trade for five figures on the secondary market. We all had a chance to get the blue pair, at least.

Over the years, Travis Scott and Air Jordan sneakers have become one of the most sought-after on the primary and secondary markets. A huge reason for that is the scarcity factor coupled with the hype factor of Jordan Brand and Travis Scott.
